RAF Scampton

RAF Scampton today acts as parent station to 4 ‘lodgers’: Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (RAFAT), No 1 Air Control Centre (1ACC), Control and Reporting Centre (CRC) Scampton, and the Mobile Meteorological Unit (MMU).

The station opened in 1916 as Brattleby Cliff but was renamed Scampton in the spring of 1917 and developed as a Royal Flying Corps station. At the outbreak of WWII Scampton was transferred to Bomber Command and in March 1943, 617 Sqn was established for the Dambusters mission. On 25 April 1945 the last bombing mission from Scampton was launched against Hitler’s mountain retreat at Obersalzberg. In 1954 the Station was used for the making of “The DamBusters” film. The location of the base in relation to Ermine Street is significant. Use of the historic route through north Lincolnshire for pilot training purposes in WWI is well documented and the views along the road to Lincoln Cathedral traditionally assisted pilots returning to base to locate the airfield.

Scampton is 4 miles north of Lincoln City centre. The nearest village Welton has many amenities including shops, post office, hairdressers, primary & secondary schools, playgroups, doctors, dentist, vets, pet shop, pubs, churches, Golf Club & sports fields.

RAF Kirton in Lindsey, home to No.1 Air Control Centre (1ACC) is approximately a 10 - 15min drive away and a station shuttle bus is available Monday to Friday to transport service personnel only to RAF Scampton from RAF Kirton in Lindsey and vice versa.

Scampton SFA site has a Spar shop & Post Office, which provide a cash machine. There is also a HIVE, Coffee Shop, Thrift Shop & local DE Housing office. The Hemswell Community Centre contains a HIVE, coffee Shop, hairdressers & Families Bar/Pub, to be opened shortly. Kirton in Lindsey has a satellite HIVE (soon to be relocated in the rear of Junior Ranks Mess). The Station Gymnasium & Officers Mess is also situated on the SFA site.
